  8. To create a link to another file
  9. • Before you can create a link, both the file you are creating the link in and the file you are linking to must be saved.

  11. 1) Select (highlight) the text to use as the link
  12. You must use unique text for each link, but you can use the same text over again to refer to the same document.
  13.  
  14. For example, the text ‘File A’ always opens a file named ‘A’, you can’t use the text ‘File A’ in the same document to link to any file other than ‘A’. However, you can repeat the text ‘File A’ to create multiple links to the file named ‘A’. The unique linked text only applies to a single document - you can use the text ‘File A’ in another document to link to any file.

  16. You can fully edit any document that contains links. If you want to edit linked text, however, you must delete the link, edit the text, and create a new link. Otherwise, the original link will never be referenced.

  18. 2) Select ‘Create Link…’ from the HyperBox menu
  19. The Open/Save dialog box opens prompting for the file to link to.

  21. 3) Select the file to link
  22. Select a file (a document or application) that’s on your computer or on a networked drive.

You should distinguish the linked text so you, or someone else, can select it. Since the exact text is still selected, this is a good time to apply your selected Styles. This document uses blue underline to identify links, however, you can use any style – just be consistent. It’s your job, as the link’s author, to maintain the correct text formatting for links.

  26. On the other hand, if you’d rather not change the formatting of your document, you can access the links through the Show Links window.

  28. To create a link to a URL on the Internet
  29. 1) Select (highlight) the text to use as the link

  31. 2) Select ‘Create Link…’ from the HyperBox menu
  32.  
  33. 3) Press the ‘URL Link’ button in the Open/Save dialog box

  35. 4) Enter the URL
  36.  
  37. HyperBox supports any URL that is supported by your Web Browser. This includes:
  38.      Hypertext Transfer Protocol - HTTP ( http://hostname:port/path_to_resource )
  39.      File Transfer Protocol - FTP ( ftp://username:password@hostname:port/path_to_resource )
  40.      Gopher Protocol - Gopher ( gopher://hostname:port/path_to_resource )
  41.      Electronic Mail Address - Mailto ( mailto:username@host )
  42.      Usenet News - News ( news:newsgroup - name )
  43.      Usenet News with Network News Transfer Protocol - NNTP ( nntp://hostname/newsgroup - name )
  44.      Remote Login Sessions - telnet ( telnet://username:password@hostname:port )
  45.      Wide Area Information Servers - WAIS ( wais://hostname:port/database )
